Minneapolis Park Police Recognized for Exceptional Service

The Minneapolis Park Police Department received nine awards at the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) 2007 Awards Banquet on Feb. 12. Mayor R. T. Rybak and MPD Chief Tim Dolan will recognize the Park Police for their exceptional service to the Department and the community. Link to Website Article

New PLEA Officers for 2007

Captain Carl R. Nielsen, District Commander for the Florida Park Police has been named the new PLEA Executive Director. This is a new position in the PLEA organization and Carl is now essentially in charge of overseeing the website, membership, education and training with the assistance of the PLEA Committees and board members.

PLEA Board member Mike Burko is assuming the duties of Newsletter Editor from Stuart Foland, who remains a PLEA Board member and Past President of PLEA. Dale Steele is the new Treasurer of PLEA, and we also want to welcome our newest Board Member Gary Dodson. Gary said, "I am very excited in accepting a position on the PLEA Board of Directors. I believe I will bring a fresh and positive perspective to this fine association. I am hoping my 30 years of Law Enforcement experience will be a benefit to the organization and I look forward to learning a new and different approach as it applies to Park Law Enforcement. See you all in Chicago!"

PLEA Newell S. Rand Jr. Memorial Scholarship Award

At the last PLEA Board Meeting held on March 1, 2005, Board Members approved the following criteria for the Newell S. Rand Jr. Memorial Scholarship Award. Selected recipients will receive a one-time $500 scholarship. Applicant must submit current resume including education, work experience, and civic activity. Applicant must write a letter showing their interest in the Park Law Enforcement field and explain why they are worthy of the PLEA Scholarship. Applicant must be enrolled in a field of study related to Park Law Enforcement. Applicant must submit a letter of recommendation from an instructor or advisor in their field of study. One $500.00 scholarship will be awarded yearly at the PLEA annual conference. The $500.00 scholarship will be released on applicant's behalf to the college and/or PLEA educational training of their choice. Proof of enrollment will be required. Scholarship winners will have one year to use the PLEA scholarship. All applicants will submit entries to the PLEA President by October 1st of the current calendar year. PLEA Scholarship winners will be chosen by the PLEA Board or committee appointed by the PLEA board. The winner will be the person whose entry best represents the future of Park Law Enforcement.

PLEA Newsletter

The new PLEA Newsletter for Fall is now available for general download. We initially send it out as a .pdf to all members we have valid email addresses for, and we contact those who don't to give them the address to download the current Newsletter. The newsletter is available for general download approximately one month after distribution to the members. Help support this website and the association by joining PLEA!
