Requirements for lifeguard cadet:
Six months of experience as a lifeguard at facilities other than swimming pools.
Successful completion of two years (60 semester units) of study from a state accredited college or university,
including a minimum of 21 semester units of course work satisfying General Education Curriculum standards.
Specialization in park administration, natural sciences, social sciences, law enforcement or related fields is desirable.
Lifeguards must possess a valid California Driver’s License of the appropriate class; be in excellent physical condition
and possess a corrected visual acuity of 20/20 or better in each eye; an uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better in
each eye; a peripheral visual field of at least 120 degrees horizontally and 100 degrees vertically in each eye; normal
color vision, as determined by Ishihara or other color plate tests.
Minimum age for appointment to a peace officer class is eighteen years old. Due to the fact that State Park Rangers
and Lifeguards are peace officers, an applicant who has been convicted of a felony will not be accepted for this
examination.
State Park Lifeguard Cadet is the entry level to the State Park Lifeguard series.
Duties include the rescue of persons or vessels in distress, the performance of first aid, assist and advise park
visitors regarding rules and regulations, enforce laws, interpret natural resources, perform resource protection
and management, and operate and maintain emergency equipment. Cadets and lifeguards may perform cliff rescues
and underwater diving.
Lifeguards and Rangers are trained peace officers and perform a wide variety of law enforcement activities.

SONOMA COUNTY REGIONAL PARKS DEPARTMENT:
Sonoma County's park system is comprised of 39
parks incorporating 5000 acres of ocean
shoreline, lake and river front, forest,
mountain, valley, canyon, wildlife areas, and
access trails. Park Rangers are charged with
the responsibility of being stewards of the
parks, protecting the parks' natural
resources, and ensuring that visitors to the
parks have a safe and enjoyable experience.
The most qualified candidates will be problem
solvers with good judgement, and will be able
to work independently. They will have strong
interpersonal skills to deal effectively and
tactfully with the public. The Regional Parks
Department is interested in hiring talented
individuals at the entry level who have a
career interest in park management and the

THE POSITION: Rangers are assigned to patrol
assigned park areas on foot or in vehicles,
explain park rules, collect visitor day-use
and camping fees, respond to visitor questions
and complaints, inspect park areas for
cleanliness and safety, perform grounds
maintenance and clean facilities, correct
hazardous conditions, perform peace officer
duties within park areas, administer emergency
medical care, conduct nature and interpretive
programs for visitors, supervise staff, gather
and catalog environmentally related data,
maintain records, and perform related duties
as required.
The Park Ranger Trainee receives training in
one or more assigned park units and is
expected to qualify for promotion to the full
working level of Park Ranger I within one
year. This requires certification as an
Emergency Medical Technician I, successful

Academy, and successful completion of a PC 832
(powers of arrest) course.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Job duties are

Special Qualifications:
Park Ranger I: Requires certificate of
successful completion of the 290-hour basic
law enforcement training certified by the U.S.
Dept of the Interior as qualifying for
employment in the National Park Service and
other federal agencies or equivalent and a
P.C. 832 course, or equivalent police academy;
also requires a current and valid
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency
Cardiac Care Card, and a current First
Responder or Emergency Response certificate.
Prior to the expiration of the probationary
period, incumbents must also acquire a valid
Emergency Medical Technician Basic
certificate, and successfully complete
required training in the use of a baton and
pepper spray.
Knowledge and Abilities

principles of park administration, such as fee
collection, park patrol, park law enforcement,
and park interpretation; hand tools, work

aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

operations, enforce park and aquatic rules,

semi-skilled in carpentry, plumbing and
electrical work; perform general building and
maintenance and repair tasks with hand tools
and light machines; provide first aid to park

States monetary units and other basic
arithmetic calculations; detect safety hazards
within a park and aquatic area and take

There are two different entry-level positions within the Missouri State Park Rangers. The only difference in the two positions is the amount of experience required.
The Park Ranger Recruit position requires an individual to have 60 semester hours of credit from an accredited college or university. Fifteen of the 60 hours of credit must be in law enforcement, criminal justice, sociology, psychology, or a closely related behavioral science.
The Park Ranger position requires an individual to be a graduate of a Missouri Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission approved law enforcement academy.
Both positions require applicants to:

Prior to appointment, a drug screen, background investigation, and psychological evaluation (waived for current County employees who have previously taken this exam) will be completed.
EXAMINATION PROCEDURE: All applicants meeting minimum requirements will take a written examination and a physical agility test. These examinations will be given at various times during the year to those who have applied. The written and the physical agility test scores will be tabulated and the addendum information evaluated to determine which applicants will be invited to participate in the structural interview. The oral examination score will then be added to determine the applicants final rating. This final rating will determine the applicant’s standing on the eligibility list. Each applicant will be permitted to go through the examination process only once during a twelve month period unless a new posting with revised examination components is issued.
ELIGIBILITY LISTS: Candidates must pass all examinations and meet all qualifications to be added to the eligibility list. Once on the list, eligibility lasts for one year (unless the list is cancelled and examination procedures revised). The list may also be used to fill openings that occur in similar law enforcement positions. Promotional candidates and applicants with highest combined rankings on the examination components will be considered first. Candidates placed on the list who are later found to have employment or character histories which are incompatible with the high standards expected of County Park Rangers may, following notification to the candidate, be removed from the eligibility list.
